Denver Massage Parlors: New rule stands to squeeze med pot providers out of retail space

In February the former software developer and his wife, Eva, a dental hygienist, had signed a three-year lease on the spiffy storefront in the town of Edgewater, just west of Denver, and opened the Northern Lights medical marijuana dispensary. Two months later, his landlord, Charles Woolley of St. Charles Town Company, broke the news that CFHA had sent notice that the dispensary was in violation of the propertys mortgage agreement.
Woolley, who has redeveloped numerous urban properties in Denver, was able to finance the Edgewater project in 2007 through $8.7 million in New Market Tax Credits offered by the federal government. Since the funds were administered through CHFA, however, its up to officials from the quasi-public agency to enforce rules preventing to certain types of businesses from setting up shop in the space, namely sin businesses such as liquor stores, massage parlors, gambling outfits and tanning salons.

What about former top Tory John Major and his cuddles with [Edwina] Currie? Or Conservative Alan Clark and all his high jinks? Numerically, the Tories knock spots off Liberal Democrats for such stories. And if anyone wishes to wager that it’s not still going on in Tory or Labour ranks, name your price for that bet.
And what about Mark Oaten and his antics with a rent boy? Does this prove the Lib-Dems are different? Only to those wilfully forgetting the tragic fate of the late Stephen Milligan MP, a Conservative who died in exotic personal circumstances, or the late Welsh Nationalist Assembly Member, Phil Williams, who recently passed away in a Cardiff massage parlour.

Denver Massage Parlors: Georgetown Pizza Carryout Canned

After months of legal hearings and testimony, the owners voluntarily shut down this week as they faced even tougher legal action from the city.
Although a representative of the owners couldn’t be reached, city officials said the pizza parlor may apply for a proper license in the future, but neighbors are hoping the tiny shop becomes something a little more compatible to the neighborhood. A Domino’s Pizza parlor is a half-block away, next door to the venerable Booeymonger.
Mayor Adrian Fenty, DCRA Director Linda Argo and D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles joined with neighborhood residents and businesses to celebrate the pizza joint victory. Nickles kind of turned it into a political rally for the mayor’s reelection this fall, saying the Fenty administration has gone after illegal businesses ranging from auto shops to massage parlor brothels to slum landlords and, now, illegal pizza operations.

Denver Massage Parlors: Writers on the Range: Marijuana stores get no respect

As a recreational drug, marijuana is much safer than alcohol. An overdose causes the user to fall asleep, there is no fatal dose, being high does not lead to violent behavior and withdrawal does not provoke lethal convulsions. Of course, the plant packs as many tars and other nasty chemicals as a tobacco plant, and holding its unfiltered smoke in the lungs might be as carcinogenic as cigarette smoke. We won’t know the consequences of widespread regular use of pot until enough human guinea pigs do it long enough for lung complications to manifest themselves.
In any case, in January of 2000, 54 percent of Colorado’s voters approved Amendment 20 to the state Constitution authorizing the use of medical marijuana in small amounts for medically sick people. In Colorado, at least, it is clear that it is to be used medically, not recreationally. It strikes me that if this is the voter’s intent, then it should be connected with a pharmacy rather than a ganja caf or a massage parlor. There is still, however, the problem that a marijuana bust by a federal law enforcement agent can lead to a felony conviction.

Denver Massage Parlors: Rx for dope

Now the task force has submitted its first set of proposals, recommending that dispensaries be prohibited within 1,000 feet of schools, playgrounds or libraries and within 500 feet of each other. It also recommended that dispensary hours be limited, that the storefronts be required to hire private security and that dispensary applicants be required to provide evidence showing their operation would be legitimately nonprofit. Future recommendations are to include guidelines for police enforcement and for patients and caregivers.
For an industry with the track record of marijuana dispensaries, these recommendations clearly don’t go far enough.
The obvious first step would be to allow marijuana dispensaries only as police-regulated businesses, just like massage parlors, strip joints, pawn shops and numerous other businesses. Would-be dispensary owners and operators should be required to submit their applications to the police department and they and their employees should be subject to criminal background checks. Police should be the lead enforcement agency for compliance.

HARRISBURG, Pa. An appeals court has ruled Pennsylvania State Police botched a prostitution investigation in which troopers gave an informant money to pay for sex four times at a massage parlor, along with a total of $180 for the man’s trouble.
The Superior Court opinion issued Thursday upheld a Lehigh County judge’s ruling that threw out prostitution charges against Sun Cha Chon in suburban Allentown on the grounds that the government had acted outrageously.
The appeals court ruling described how the man first approached state police to say he had been solicited for sex at the Shiatsu Spa. Troopers then supplied the unnamed man with government money and sent him back four times to engage in what the county judge called “a smorgasbord of sexual activity” during June and July 2006.

But as more and more of these massage parlors and therapeutic massage facilities open their doors, we sit down with the department that is responsible for giving these businesses licenses to operate and ensuring they are operating in accordance to Guam law.

He continued, “We look at massage parlors strictly from the environmental health perspective, which means we regulate it for sanitation. We ensure that the employees have a health certificate to make sure the facility is in sanitary condition. Granted, there are beliefs; within the majority of the population and even in our office, that it’s simply a massage parlor is simply a facility where prostitution occurs.”
Nadeau says the Division of Environmental Health only has nine field staff, three of whom are specifically assigned to inspect the 3,100+ health regulated facilities such as eating and drinking establishments, hotels and massage parlors. While their mandated to inspect these facilities four times a year, Nadeau admits his staff haven’t inspected many in years.

Denver Massage Parlors: Dozens arrested in prostitution busts

DENVER – FBI officials tell 9Wants to Know they arrested 27 people from the Denver area during raids aimed at under-age prostitution late last week and into the weekend.
In Denver, 24 were arrested for prostitution, two were taken into custody for being pimps and another was arrested on an outstanding warrant.
Agents rescued 52 children in a series of raids around the country, though no children were found in the Denver area busts, according to FBI spokeswoman Kathy Wright.
“Child prostitution continues to be a significant problem in our country, as evidenced by the number of children rescued through the continued efforts of our Crimes Against Children task forces,” Kevin Perkins, assistant director of the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division, said.
Officials checked out massage parlors located at 1529 Champa Street and 2060 S. Huron Street as part of the Denver investigation.

Denver Massage Parlors: Prostitutes Arrested in Denver Area

DENVER – Police in Denver arrested 15 people as part of a three-day crack down on child prostitution called Operation Cross Country. The operation was part of a nationwide effort led by the FBI.
While the operation in Denver netted 15 arrests for prostitution, none of those involved children.
On Thursday the operation focused on escort services with a focus on possible under-age prostitutes. The operation did include the arrest of two 18-year old women. That effort combined the forces of the Denver, Thornton and Aurora Police Departments along with the FBI.
On Friday Denver Police and the FBI concentrated on massage parlors. That effort netted four arrests and resulted in the closure of two massage parlors.
