We have a book club for the staff called Strip It Down. We meet once a week. It’s a conservative reading group. BH: Well. What do you read? Matthews: Friedrich Hayek’s “The Fatal Conceit,” “Super Freakonomics,” the Federalist Papers. We talk about the prisoner’s dilemma (a philosophical question about human behavior). From the comments at Reason: Cliché Bandit I know Debbie. She is a great contributor to the Colorado LP. She and one of her Managers were the firebrands behind the Libertarian taking over of the Glendale City Council (the location of Shotgun’s and an island of a city completely surounded by Denver but that is another cool stoty). She also sponsored the 2008 Denver LP Convention, which was awesome, and gave out free passes to everyone who bought a package (hehe he said package). The girls also had a booth at the convention. Man that was a good time. Nothing like watching Bob Barr talk to strippers.

My wife is from Denver, and I’ve driven passed Shotgun Willie’s countless times. As a married man who wants to set a good example for his daughters, going to a strip club is out of the question. Still, this Denver Post interview with the Shotgun Willie’s owner Debbie Matthews — one of the few women owners in the strip club business — was certainly interesting. Particularly this tidbit:

Prosecutors believe Walters staged a traffic accident on the 100 block of South Yuma Street in Denver to try to conceal what he had really done to her. Their case is built largely on the words of his estranged wife. They say Walters told her, “He killed Brittney then staged the car accident to get away with it.”
Based on those conversations, some of which the wife recorded, they believe Walters and Brashers got into an argument while driving back to Colorado Springs on Nov. 17, 2009.
According to the arrest affidavit, before the crash Walters and Brashers had been at a photo shoot at a strip club where she took off her top. In the affidavit, “He said that he was ’sad’… but they did not argue about it on the way home.”

Denver Strip Clubs: Police: Man Killed Girlfriend, Faked Car Crash

Robert Walters, 24, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Brittney Brashers, of Colorado Springs.
Walters was in Brashers’ car when it appeared to go out of control and crashed into two parked cars on Nov. 17. He suffered only minor injuries and said he was asleep at the time of the crash. He told police Brashers shouldn’t have been driving because she was too intoxicated.
Police suspected otherwise, but it wasn’t until Walters’ estranged wife came forward in March that the case moved ahead. She said Walters had confessed to killing Brashers after an argument, according to the affidavit.

Witnesses told police that earlier that day, Brashers was in a photo shoot with other women at a strip club in Denver and Walters was upset because she had taken her top off.

Debbie Matthews, 60, owns and runs Shotgun Willie’s. She tells me she knows of only two other women in America who control strip clubs. She was raised in Denver in an old Colorado family; the Matthews settled in the state in the 1850s and are the Matthews of Jeffco’s Matthews/ Winters Park. She studied nursing in college, was a United Airlines flight attendant, became a full-time mom when she was 27. She fell into the peeler business when her then-husband didn’t want to run it. She had two kids by then (who now work at the club), a little money stowed away, and The Gun was born. She’s on the back patio with a tall margarita on the rocks when I arrive.

LAS VEGAS – Did UNLV jump the gun when the school dismissed assistant football coach Ty Gregorak?
The Boulder County, Colorado District Attorney’s office dropped theft and trespassing charges against Gregorak. He was accused of taking the wallet and gun of a strip club bouncer. The bouncer told police his items were taken from his car May 1st after he refused to allow Gregorak into the club. The bouncer said Gregorak appeared too intoxicated. The bouncer told police Gregorak later went to his home to apologize and return the items.
Now, Gregorak’s Denver-based attorney David Beller is revealing new details about the case. “They had the videotape in their hands and apparently hadn’t watched it. If they had, they would’ve seen it wasn’t Ty. It wasn’t Ty that was contacted outside that strip club. It simply wasn’t him,” Beller said. “He wasn’t there.”

Still, I’ve enjoyed the first two episodes, and I’m more than looking forward to the continuation of the season. The storytelling is subtle and if you don’t expect to be ROFLing at every bit of dialogue, it’ll be much more enjoyable. Trust me. Manage your expectations. Hung is not a comedy.

“We are relieved and grateful that District Attorney Amy Okubo dismissed this case. Justice, though delayed, has prevailed,” said Gregorak’s Denver-based lawyer, David Beller.
Gregorak, 31, who played at the University of Colorado, spent seven years on Bobby Hauck’s staff at the University of Montana and followed Hauck to UNLV in December. The university didn’t renew his contract this summer and he is now living in Spokane, Wash., and exploring other coaching opportunities.
Gregorak, who was on a personal trip to Colorado, was accused of breaking into a bar bouncer’s car and taking the items on May 1. The bouncer told police the items were taken hours after he refused to allow Gregorak to enter a strip club because he appeared intoxicated.

The mystery remains but the criminal charges against Ty Gregorak, who was arrested after a strange turn of events in Boulder, Colo., the morning of April 30, have been dropped.
Gregorak, linebackers coach for the Montana Grizzlies from 2003-09, was charged with vehicular trespassing and theft after an evening out with former college teammates and other friends.
The Boulder County district attorney’s office dismissed those charges Friday.
It was after Gregorak returned items he said he found in his hotel room – a handgun, a wallet, sunglasses, a cell phone and charger, a bottle of cologne – to Joseph Benedetto the morning of April 30 that Benedetto, a bouncer at the Club Nitro strip club in Boulder, accused him of theft.
