The governor promptly pledged his full co-operation “to clear up this unfortunate matter that is of vital concern to every citizen of Colorado.” On Aug. 29, he appointed A. S. (Tony) Reeder, a retired FBI agent, to head up the state investigation.
Seventeen days later Sanford came up for sentencing before District Judge George McNamara, another former policeman. McNamara sentenced Sanford to four consecutive prison terms totaling 10 to 32 years.
That weekend, convicted police-burglars began to talk.
The extent of their statements wasn’t known until Sept. 30 — Black Saturday in the history of the Denver Police Department.
At 3 p.m. that afternoon, Governor McNichols made the announcement:
The state investigation had turned up an “incredible criminal incest” implicating at least 35 Denver policemen in crimes ranging from bigtime safecracking to gambling and prostitution.
