Over just four hours Friday morning, Coombs received 17 emails about the issue from constituents, 10 supporting his stance and seven opposing it. Samples from some of the messages:
“I’m a married 23-year-old soldier at Buckley Air Force Base … I have always strongly supported my gay brothers and sisters and that has crossed over to support in the civilian world. Your right to free speech has not been eradicated by becoming mayor and I think it is a great thing to be able to voice your support within the network of other leaders who believe in simple civil rights (for ALL).”
“Did you know that civil unions, prostitution, (and) sex before and outside of marriage is immoral? Please do not let this fine city be controlled by Satan and immorality. My gut instincts were right. I had a bad feeling about you when you were elected.”
